services / Anti HotLinking Protection

The majority of websites running on the Apache Web Server employ .htaccess and mod_rewrite for protecting images and other content against hotlinking. However, there are limitations on the effectiveness of the hotlinking protection when protecting video files, because referrer information is not passed for every access to a video file. Such as saving the files directly to disk. Because of this valid users get denied access to content, the only other alternative is to leave the files unprotected and risk paying
exorbitant overage fees should the files be hotlinked. To this end Reality Check Network has developed ConvertVP, an Apache module written in C that allows hotlink protection on movie files without restricting valid users, allowing them to save the files directly to disk, use download managers, or any other method for access.

ConvertVP v2.1 is a fully featured, configurable, and streamlined Apache module that allows you to fine tune web surfers access to your content. It has been carefully developed to provide the finest grain of access protection while minimizing its foot print on your server. Read below to see all of its features and how you can decrease your bandwidth bills by using ConvertVP:
Feature Benefit
Programmed in C w/ Apache API
The Apache Module is coded entirely in C which gives the code the smallest foot print possible and doesnt require any bulky compilers to execute. In addition it uses the Apache API extensively to integrate seamlessly into the regular Apache execution cycle and prevent memory leaks by using native Apache memory allocation procedures. The code has been tested to be faster than similar protection schemes that function on Perl/CGI, php, or mod_rewrite. During tests on servers with 20-40Mbps of traffic there was no significant change in load (less than .05).
Highly Configurable
Because Convert VP is an Apache Module coded with the Apache API it is configured inside of native Apache configurations, such as httpd.conf and even .htaccess. Furthermore, fine grained control is possible as it supports all native Apache configuration directives such as <VirtualHost>, <Location>, <Directory>, and <Files>.
No User Side Requirements
Often times similar protection schemes require that end users either have Javascript enabled or cookies enabled for the software to function. ConvertVP works entirely server side and does not require either Javascript or Cookies to be enabled. Thus, valid users are not rejected based on their browsing preferences.
Redirect Traffic
Not only will you be lowering your bandwidth bills by denying access to users who seek to abuse your hosting, but you can also redirect them to any URL of your choice, making the traffic productive.
